Do you know that regular Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) is not stable? It degrades in cosmetic products very fast, especially when exposed to light, air, and water. L-ascorbic acid loses as much as 20% activity in the first 3 weeks after the product is manufactured. Often, the Vitamin C in a product is already partially degraded before it ever gets on the shelf in a store. This is why you see so many Vitamin C products that claim 10%, 20% or higher Vitamin C. They have to start with really high levels when they make the product in order to have a little be left after it degrades. If your Vitamin C product is a dark yellow, orange, or brown color, the Vitamin C is already degraded.
