Libby Laboratories, Inc.
Libby Laboratories, Inc. was founded
in 1959 by Dr. Henry Libby. Dr. Libby was a graduate of UC Berkeley in Physiology
and UCSF Pharmacy School. Susan Libby, company President, began learning the
business from the ground up at the tender age of 11 then entered the company
full time after acquiring her degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
The company began in a small manufacturing site in Berkeley, CA. For the
first couple of years, the company produced chemical specialties and sanitary chemicals. In 1962, the company moved to a larger site, expanded their scope
to include cosmetics, and became the pioneer company to work with natural ingredients
such as strawberries, avocados, and papayas.
A second manufacturing site was opened in 1966. Libby Labs
soon became involved with a major national company who was marketing skin care
and cosmetic products. In 1976, Libby Labs moved to a large, new facility in
Berkeley and expanded its manufacturing and packaging capabilities to offer a
broader range of options to their customers.
Over the past 49 years, Libby Labs has pioneered many of the current cosmetic
trends. Libby Labs has worked with many different companies to do innovative
product development work such as peptides in skin & hair products, musk perfume,
the first non-PABA sunscreens, milk amino acids, meadowfoam oil, avocado oil,
jojoba oil, shea butter, ultrasonic cleaners, and lactic acid moisturizers. In
the 1960's, Libby Labs was the nucleus of the natural cosmetic wave and continues
to produce quality natural and botanical products today. In the 1980's and 1990's
the trend for AHA products, broad spectrum and higher SPF sunscreens, and dermatological
treatment products increased and Libby Labs was at the forefront developing products
to meet customer’s needs.
Now, in the 21st century, Libby Labs is developing high end dermatological
and treatment products with specialized ingredients, ultra mild baby products,
organic products with botanicals to fit the new trend in healthier products,
non-sulfate shampoos & body washes for milder cleansing, as well as a host
of other innovative products.
